fabric care

Last week I bought a very nice poly lycra knit. So far I have washed it 2x once with Tide, once Tide+Borax trying to get rid on a very oily smell in the fabric . I will wash it again today. Do you think ammonia would harm the lycra? or what do you suggest?

Is it returnable? If it doesn't smell like other poly/lycra knits you've had, it'd go back if it were mine.

Try using white distilled vinegar in your rinse cycle.

In my experience the smell doesn't go away -- I had a client bring me poly/spandex fabric for a costume. I had to ask her to take it home and try washing it and hanging it to dry to see if the smell disappeared (or at least lessened significantly). After washing it 6 times, she gave up and bought new fabric for the costume (ended up being a very expensive costume given all the laundering and having to buy the fabric twice).

I personally wouldn't use ammonia -- you also don't want to be using hot water with the lycra/spandex content.

I will try the vinegar now. It is washing with washing soda & Tide at present.
