SEWING DARTS IN A KNIT - ZIG ZAG OR STRAIGHT?
« on: February 20, 2018, 09:10:35 AM »
When sewing a dart in a stretchy knit, should I use a straight stitch or a small zig zag? Thanks in advanced!

A dart is no place for anything other than a smooth, straight, no puckered line. Plus, it's easier to pick out the stitches if you have to do that. So straight stitch is best.

I think the key to stitch choice, is whether the seam is "under load" So while a sleeve seam, or crotch seam would be under strain, either in the wearing, or just putting the item on/off, a dart isn't really under load. And I agree with Shannon ..... it needs to be a neat seam. Anything lumpy would just draw the eye.

Knits don't usually require darts.

Use a straight stitch set at a length 3.5mm. Stitch with a stretch needle.
