Hem folding/flipping up
« on: January 27, 2018, 09:35:57 AM »
I made a t-shirt using jersey fabric but when I wear it, the t-shirt hem flips/turns up. Why is this?

Thank you!

How deep is your hem? Lighter-weight jersey hems tend to roll if they are too narrow.

If that's not the problem, please give us more info on the hem, pattern, etc. Can you post a pic?

Thanks Shannon, I think from what you've said, it's too narrow. I did wonder if that was the problem. I was running short of fabric so didn't follow the pattern when it came to the hem. Oh well... I've learnt from that mistake!

Tiny stitches and too-high thread tension can also contribute to flipping hems.

If you don't want to go to the trouble of cutting a facing for the shirt, hemming by hand with a relaxed catch stitch-- not loose, just relaxed -- and then ripping out the old stitching can be a fix, too.

If your hem is too narrow, you can add some more fabric to make the hem deeper. Just remove the stitching, sew on another strip of fabric (right sides together) and then flip that piece to the inside of the garment and hem. Ta Da! Deeper hem! ;

This is a hem facing, in case you want to search for tutorials to try to salvage your top.

Hem facing is the way to go on this problem.
